Wilson Martins Coutinho saved this pup. He’s famous in his home town of Rio de Janeiro for rescuing dogs from desperate situations.

This dog is his most recent rescue: Francisco de Jesus. If Wilson hadn’t come along, Francisco would have died from his wounds.

Francisco had large open wounds and was being eaten alive by maggot infestations all over his body.

Tender Foot

One of Francisco’s rear paws was so severely damaged that you could see the tendons inside.

Swollen Ears

Francisco’s ears were swollen and covered in sores and maggots.

The Healing Process

To get Francisco back on the road to health, Wilson had to clean out each of his wounds by hand — several times a day.

The maggots feeding on his wounds had to be pulled out with a steady hand and a strong pair of tweezers.

The infestation was really bad.

Ointment helped Francisco fight infection and keep his wounds clean.

It’s hard to imagine the pain little Francisco had to go through.

Throughout his treatment, little Francisco tried his best to be good.

Once his treatment was over, it was time for a treat.

Once the hard part was over, Francisco’s biggest job was to get some rest.

Within a few days, Francisco was well enough to get out and about and enjoy a few checkups with the local vet.

Soon, Francisco’s wounds began to heal up.
