Puppy No One Thought Would Survive Celebrates 1st Birthday
Last year, we shared with you the story behind the picture of the two pit bulls with the caption, “Mean dogs? Where? Are they behind us?!” There were lots of photos of Roofus and Kilo, along with their new little sister, Penny. She was abandoned at birth by her young mother, and was the only one of her siblings to survive. Two weeks ago she celebrated her first birthday.
“Sweet P day 366: Happy birthday to our princess Penny! As soft, rolly, velvety, kissy, human, loving, cuddly, silly, and beautiful as ever,” Candice wrote on Facebook.
“I never thought a year ago, when I brought you home in a cardboard box at 3 days old, that this is where we’d be today. Any of it! I am so grateful for all the wonderful people we’ve ‘met’ over the past year. Thank you for being there for our journey.”
Penny was born to a young mom who hadn’t (yet) developed a maternal instinct, and she refused to nurse her puppies.
“I tried to save her brother as well but he did not survive the drive home. I wasn’t sure if she was going to make it,” Candice said.
But she lovingly bottle fed and burped the tiny pup, and Penny thrived. She soon found her place among her new older siblings. Part playful, part psycho, part loving, she charmed her way into everyone’s hearts and became a foster fail.
Now she’s all grown up, but she’s still just as adorable and charismatic as ever.
