Over 400 Shelter Pets, Including 3-Legged Mouse, Flown To Safety Ahead of Hurricane Laura

Hurricane Laura made landfall on the border of Louisiana and Texas as a Category 4 hurricane with sustaining winds of 150 miles per hour, making it one of the most powerful storms in U.S. history.

Residents in the Gulf Coast were urged to evacuate days before the devastating storm hit, including shelter pets.

Thanks to your generous donations, GreaterGood.org and Wings of Rescue were able to arrange eight emergency flights before the hurricane made landfall, flying 405 shelter pets out of harm’s way.

One of the flights carried 56 cats, 20 dogs, and 3 rabbits, and a 3-legged mouse named Pipsqueak from Texas Gulf Coast shelters to the Humane Society of North Texas. Pipsqueak was rescued from a cruelty case in Houston and his adorable face attracted tons of adopters. He had a waitlist when he arrived in North Texas but is now enjoying life in his forever home.

Pipsqueak wasn’t the only lucky fella to find a forever home. Pork Chop and several others found loving homes after arriving.

However, there are many other hurricane evacuees still waiting to be adopted.

Brandywine Valley SPCA and Humane Animal Welfare Society – HAWS of Waukesha also opened their shelters to the evacuees and are working on finding them all forever homes.

Countless other shelters stepped up to help transport shelter pets to the flights and prep them for their journey, so thank you to everyone involved.
