Jedi the Dog Senses Low Blood Glucose, Saves 7-Year-Old Master Luke

Jedi the dog is no sci-fi hero. He’s a real-life guardian.

7-year-old Luke Nuttall was born with Type 1 diabetes. He’s been managing blood glucose spikes and dips his whole life, but like any kid, he can’t always see them coming.

Nighttime is especially dangerous. As many as 1 in 20 young Type 1 diabetes patients die in their sleep from a phenomenon known as “dead in bed syndrome.”

One night when Luke was asleep, his glucose levels began to drop dangerously low. His monitor was silent and his parent were asleep in the other room.

No one noticed…except Jedi. Within minutes, Jedi was in Luke’s mother’s room, jumping on the bed to wake her up.

“Jedi jumped off the bed, then back on again, though I felt him do this I didn’t wake up,” Dorrie — Luke’s mother — wrote. “Then Jedi laid on me. I woke up…without Jedi I would have had no idea that he was dropping out of a safe range.”
