Winter proves to be the harshest season for stray dogs enduring the elements without shelter or sustenance. In St. Louis, a compassionate team of rescuers received word of an entire family of dogs seeking refuge in an abandoned dwelling. Isolated from basic necessities, a mother dog and her pups faced dire circumstances. Freezing temperatures, hunger, and exposure pushed them to the brink. Donna Lochmann, an experienced rescuer from Stray Rescue of St. Louis, received a tip from a concerned local regarding a pregnant dog taking refuge
“We followed paw prints through the snow to an abandoned building where a Good Samaritan said they saw a pregnant dog. The single digit freezing temperatures were dangerous and would be deadly to newborns,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis wrote on their Facebook page.
Tracing paw prints through the snow, the team discovered the abandoned structure where the pregnant dog sought shelter. Despite the treacherous conditions, the resilient mother had already given birth and managed to protect her litter from the cold. “Our fingers and toes hurt from the cold, we can’t believe this resilient little family survived as long as they did,” they added.
Overwhelmed by the family’s survival, the team swiftly leashed the mother they later named Grammys, ensuring her safety and that of her six puppies. The rescuers named the puppies appropriately for their award-winning personalities and tenacity: Emmys, Oscars, SAG, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Tonys. After a vet examination, the dog family found sanctuary in a foster home, receiving much-needed care and warmth.
Settling into their new environment, the dogs slowly emerged from their trauma, relishing in the comfort of a loving home for the first time. Despite their past hardships, the foster family vowed to shower them with tender loving care, aiding their recovery and trust-building process.
Once fully healed, Grammys and her pups will seek adoption, eagerly anticipating a forever home filled with love and boundless adventures.
