There are approximately 260 fewer homeless cats and dogs in the world today…but it isn’t the result of something positive. According to the Straits Times, a huge fire at an animal shelter in South Korea killed an estimated 180 dogs and 80 cats.

The blaze started in the early morning hours on Friday in the Anseong, Gyeonggi Province – firefighters report that the structure burned for three hours. The devastating fire destroyed about half of the structure, which holds an estimated 400 dogs and 100 cats.

There were no human casualties, aside from a bite which one firefighter sustained from a dog. The cause of the fire is under investigation, though an electrical short is suspected. No word on whether or not this animal shelter facility was equipped with a sprinkler system.

Meanwhile in Australia, approximately 1000 free roaming animals are at risk from a raging wildfire that is outside of Melbourne. According to TVNZ, staff at the private sanctuary are trying to relocate the animals that they can, but the animals that roam cannot be moved.
